Choose settings based on use
For website and document images, limiting the longest edge often saves more than lowering quality alone. A 1600-pixel limit with 75 percent JPEG/WebP quality is a practical starting point, not a universal optimum. For uniform avatars, catalogs or social posts, choose center-crop square: the tool uses the shorter side, removes equal amounts from both ends of the longer side, then resizes to the exact selected dimensions.
Understand formats, including Apple HEIC
JPEG suits photos but has no transparency. WebP can be efficient for photos and graphics where browser compatibility is acceptable. PNG is lossless and valuable for screenshots, text and transparency, but recompressing an already optimized PNG may not reduce it. Apple HEIC and HEIF photos are decoded entirely inside the browser, then exported as JPG, PNG or WebP; choosing keep format produces JPG because browsers do not provide a dependable HEIC encoder.

Protect originals
The downloaded result keeps the original filename and changes only the extension when you choose another output format. Your selected source file is never overwritten. Size reduction is not the same as visual quality: inspect fine text, transparency, color edges and any image that will be printed.
